Layoffs at SOE

Confirmed Layoffs

Daybreak Games, nicknamed "Dey Break Games", but known as Sony Online Entertainment just a few days ago, confirmed layoffs today. While this does not come as a surprise, as none of their recent games make much money, its still a sad day for the PC MMO crowd.

Daybreak responded to Kotaku with the following statement:
Quote
As part of a strategic decision to rationalize the business, Daybreak Game Company announced today that it will eliminate positions in both its San Diego and Austin studios. This alignment of resources better positions the newly independent studio for future growth opportunities and developments, including delivering on its legacy of making top online games and establishing a solid foundation for future multi-platform success. These reductions will not affect the operation of current games and the company will continue on its mission to partner with its player community to drive the future and push the boundaries of online gaming.

But as their unofficial source say, "Most of management keeps trying to get people pumped up about the new direction, but no one knows for sure they'll be a part of it yet". In other words, its "restructuring", "new direction" and "new focus" time for Daybreak Games.

How this turns out remains to be seen, but I wish both those laid off as well as those "unaffected" the best of luck.

Not a surprise really, but it sucks for those who loose their jobs :(
