£8.99 a month; game is Really active at the moment, went through a revival few months back and has stayed strong since. Definitely try it, is a much more relaxed MMO imo.

any suggestions on which archetype to go for?
The install gives you a good idea of the basics of each class. Unlike other games, where they hve the same classes but give them funny names , each class does what it says on the tin.
Blaster - Ranged damage, highest damage dealer in the game. Little defense. Best defense is strong offense.
Scrapper - Melee damage, pretty hefty damage, defense can be uber when set up right.
Tank - does exactly what it says on the tin.
Controller - crowd control.
Defender - erm... defends maybe?
Inside of that, pick what ever sets that look like fun. There aren't really any (to a degree) bad builds; more important is that you enjoy the character. So make what is fun.

depends on what you are like as a person normally:
if you like to go in to crowds and attacking Tanker/Blaster for Heroes, Brute/Masterminds for Villains.
If you like to be a healer team player and into your buffs Defender
If you like ranged Blasters for heroes, corruptors on VIllains
If you like to be a seeky in little so and so, Stalkers in Villains
for holds etc Controllers on heroes, Dom's on Villains
and with each arch you have sooooo much to choose from and just making your toon is fun with so many options(not like WOW or AOC colour the hair different but thats it).
I think you will love the game and the atmosphere we have to offer mate, download teamspeak and I will send you the stuff you need in game.

Global is normally the first character you make, so first character for me was Infinitron, hence @infinitron.
You can change it (i think only once), but i cant remember how, as i have never had to.

To answer your question about your global name, go to menu and click Chat Handle (here your current global name will be displayed and you'll be given the option to change it only once).
