SteamOS announced
« on: 23 September, 2013, 11:23:29 pm »

Valve's Secret Reveal

Valve's new SteamOS is a new operating system based on Linux. It will feature everything steam has to offer right now, including a new streaming functionality where you can stream from your home computer to the SteamOS enabled box connected to your PC. This should in theory allow you to utilize the processing power of your normal desktop PC and stream it to your "console" (which would just relay the picture from your pc and take the inputs of controllers).

With the addition of Family Sharing (available on steam beta at the moment) where you can share games with your family (you cannot play the same game at the same time though) it should allow for a huge library of games for you entire family easily accessible.

They also claim the new SteamOS has achieved significant performance advantages on the graphics processing. I'm curious to how this will work with all the windows directx games out there. Guess time will tell. Worst case, it sounds like you can just stream it from your windows pc anyways.

They claim SteamOS will be free forever.

What do you think their OS market share will look like this time next year? Valve have the *potential* to shut the console market down. I'm not saying they'll do it, because fanboys and exclusives, but if these announcements continue to be solid then they are guaranteed a contender spot in the war for the living room.

I had also hoped to have not seen the words 'streaming' and 'games' in the same sentence, but if Valve think they can do it convincingly then who am I to argue.

I thought Valves family sharing thing was limited so only one person could use the collection at one time?  i.e. if my wife is playing Skyrim shared from my library I can't additionally play Fallout 3.

Is that not correct?

When you start Fallout your wife will be kicked out, as you own the account.

She will be kicked out and then I will be kicked.

This "feature" is sounding worse and worse by the day.
